Meet Dawn and Matt! They are the sweetest couple who got married on July 1st at Saint James United Methodist Church.  See more below from their special day and the cute detail we include as a nod to their first date!

How did you two meet? Tell us your love story!

Matt and I are an eharmony success story. We were matched and began talking toward the end of October 2014. I thought Matt was way too sophisticated and mature for me, but I thought he was handsome and decided to give it a shot. It was difficult to get our schedules to align since he traveled for work and was raising two great boys and I was working full time and going to school. But on December 6 he called me up and said I’m free tomorrow afternoon if you’d like to meet up and I threw caution to the wind and decided to meet him. We met at Cracker Barrel ( the only decent restaurant in the area much to his dismay) in LaGrange, GA which was halfway between my house in Atlanta and his in Montgomery. I still remember seeing him for the first time like it was yesterday. He had the biggest smile on his face and gave me the biggest hug! He was like a big teddy bear and I knew then it would be very easy to give him my heart. We went in the restaurant and just couldn’t stop talking, which is odd for me since I’m a huge introvert. The waitress just couldn’t believe we were on our first date. After grabbing coffee at Starbucks and trying to prolong the date as long as possible Matt gave me the sweetest kiss and asked if we could date exclusively. I agreed and we finally headed back to our homes. On my way back home I called my dad to chat and he asked where I’d been and I told him on my first date with his future son-in-law and I’ve never been happier in my life to be right.

Any funny stories about your first date?

Our first original date was supposed to be at his best friend’s wedding, but I had a study group and couldn’t make it; however we were lucky to have Mike stand by Matt at ours.

How did he propose?

Matt had my engagement ring shipped to his mom in Nashville so I wouldn’t see it before hand. We had tickets to see Leon Bridges one of Matt’s favorite singers. But the afternoon before Matt asked me if I minded if we cancelled and met his Mother for dinner instead. Since I love his mother I was all in. So after work we drove to the Cullman Cracker Barrel and met his mother for dinner. And drove back to my house in Birmingham. When we got there I went to freshen up and when I came back in the living room Matt was on one knee and said, ” You’re my best friend and I can’t imagine my life without you in it. Will you marry me?”

What was the most special memory of your proposal?

Aside from the man I love the most in the world asking me to be a family with him and his boys, I loved the phone calls that I had with my dad and uncle and finding out they approved and that Matt had not only asked my dad’s permission but also my Uncle’s, who is like a second father to me.

Any fun facts about you two?

Hmmm…. My family and I are competitive shooters and I introduced Matt to shooting and now he’s starting his own collection. We enjoy shooting skeet together and Matt has gone from breaking one bird to being competitive in a little under two years and often beats me! Matt and I are both huge sports fans but the only team we can agree on is the Predators. Our house is very divided as Jackson and I are Auburn fans, Carter is an Alabama fan and Matt an LSU fan. So football is interesting at our house.

A sweet detail we included in the wedding as a nod to Dawn and Matt’s first date that happened at a Cracker Barrel. Guests loved these fun escort cards directing them to their table.

What was the most important aspect in planning your wedding?

Probably being married in the church. Our Christian faith is what we built our relationship on and I really loved that we got married in the church we attend with our boys.

Were there any special traditions — songs, readings, vows, etc. that were a must to include?

While I wanted a church wedding I wanted it to include pieces of us and less traditional so I walked in to a Thousand Years by Christina Perry. It’s a beautiful song and really speaks to how I felt in that moment and how Matt makes me feel. We chose verses from Song of Solomon (8:6-7) that touched us but weren’t your traditional verses. I wore my sorority letters. I’d planned vows for Matt’s boys.

Give us your most favorite memory from your wedding day!

Threw a last minute wrench in the day’s plans, but I’m glad that Matt and I decided to wait until I walked down the aisle to see each other. I’ll never forget the way he lit up when he saw me and I’ll never forget how my heart leapt when I saw him.

What are you looking forward to most about being a newlywed?

I’m just looking forward to spending the rest of my life with my best friend and our two great kids.

Any advice for newly engaged couples?

Enjoy every minute of being engaged. Enjoy every minute of planning and don’t let it stress you out.  All I remember was how beautiful everything was and how happy I was to marry Matt.
